About Malvern Health, Inc.

Malvern Health, Inc. (previously known as Progressions Companies Incorporated) has been a leader in the provision of behavioral health services for over 70 years. We offer a breadth of behavioral health services to individuals and communities across Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Introduction to Company

Malvern Health, Inc. employs over 700 of the most committed, qualified individuals in the chemical dependency, mental health and education fields. Our employees are the backbone of our organization and our most valuable asset; we will invest in this resource by implementing a Service Excellence Program with a foundation on Compassion, Respect, Dignity and Teamwork.

We are in the process of transforming our company with a focus on quality, culture, dignity and respect to our patients, payers, stakeholders and the community. Geoff Botak has served as the President of Malvern Health, Inc since October 2018. Geoff’s vision for achieving company growth is based upon a strategic plan which will set the standard of excellence for behavioral healthcare in our market. This strategic plan encompasses the implementation of scientific evidenced-based treatment, creating a culture of dignity and respect for our patients and assuring an employee culture built upon compassion and teamwork. Prior to joining Malvern Health, Geoff established a twenty-five-year career in behavioral healthcare with Universal Health Services, Incorporated (UHS), a Fortune 500 Company and one of the nation’s largest hospital management companies. While at UHS, he advanced to the position of Senior Divisional Vice President responsible for 35 facilities in 10 states and DC, 15,000 employees and $1.4 billion in revenue. Geoff began his career as a Detox Nurse and was later promoted to Chief Executive Officer of a substance abuse residential treatment facility and then to CEO of two larger acute psychiatric facilities. Beginning in 2005, Geoff achieved multi-facility leadership as Group Director, Regional Vice President, Divisional Vice President, and Senior Divisional Vice President. Geoff is a passionate servant leader that demands service quality and operational excellence by setting high standards and developing an effective culture. These exceptional qualities have been repeatedly demonstrated through his receiving high honors and accolades for his leadership while with UHS including an Eagle Award Winner in 2007 and three-time Chairman’s Counsel Awardee in 2001, 2005, and 2006. Geoff has served on the boards of a wide variety of professional associations including the Philadelphia Division of Behavioral Health Executive Provider and Pennsylvania Council on Compulsive Gambling. Geoff resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is married with three children.

Christian Owen joined Malvern Health, Inc. in November 2018. Prior to his current position, Christian spent twelve years at Universal Health Services (UHS) in multiple finance roles at the corporate office and at behavioral health hospitals. As Regional Finance Director for UHS, Christian oversaw financial operations of Behavioral Health Facilities in Pennsylvania, Missouri, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois. In addition, Christian’s career at UHS included serving as Chief Financial Officer at Fairmount Behavioral Health, Friends Hospital, and Foundations Behavioral Health. Christian’s diverse background in healthcare/behavioral health finance also includes finance and accounting roles at Temple University Health System, United Behavioral Health, and Magellan Health Services since 2000. Christian earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting from LaSalle University. A lifelong resident of Philadelphia, Christian is a proud alumnus of Northeast Catholic High School. Christian is married with two children and a loyal puggle.

Sarah Jacoby joined Malvern Health in October 2018. Prior to her current position, she served as the Director of Admissions for Fairmount Behavioral Health System, a 239-bed behavioral health facility, for five years. In conjunction with her service at Fairmount, she also served as the Interim Director of Friends Hospital Crisis Response Center, one of the largest Crisis Response Centers in the city of Philadelphia. Sarah has held various leadership positions within both Fairmount’s Admissions Department as well as Friends Hospital’s Crisis Response Center. As part of her position, she has provided Crisis Intervention Trainings to the Philadelphia Police Department. Sarah has nearly fifteen years of achievement in the behavioral healthcare industry. Sarah is an accomplished director of access as well as administrative and fiscal manager. Sarah graduated from DeSales University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2007. She then received a Master of Arts in Clinical/Counseling Psychology from La Salle University in 2010.

Dr. Michael Salazar joined Malvern Health in May 2019, after serving for over 13 years as CEO of KeyStone Center, a 153-bed residential behavioral health facility specializing in the treatment of co-occurring disorders. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he worked as the Director of Psychology and Director of Clinical Services at KeyStone. He is a PA licensed psychologist with extensive experience working with adult and adolescent co-occurring populations and treating trauma-related disorders in residential, outpatient, and private practice settings, and has provided lectures and workshops on cognitive-behavioral strategies in relapse prevention. Dr. Salazar received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from La Salle University in 1983. He then received a Master of Arts in Applied Psychology in 1985. He earned his Doctorate from Widener University’s Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology in 1991.

Dr. Peter Swanljung joined Malvern Health in 2014. Dr. Swanljung has been board certified in psychiatry since 2007 and was certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine in 2014 and the American Board of Preventive Medicine in 2021.  Dr. Swanljung graduated Summa Cum Laude from the College of William and Mary in 1995. He went on to earn his M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine in 2002 where he graduated with honors in Behavioral Science and Psychiatry.   Dr. Swanljung completed an internship in family practice at Chestnut Hill Hospital in 2003 and completed an adult psychiatry residency at Drexel University in 2006. While at Drexel, he served as Chief Resident and earned awards for Outstanding Performance in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Clinical Excellence. After completing his residency, Dr. Swanljung became the Medical Director of the General Adult Unit at Friends Hospital in Philadelphia, serving as an expert witness in mental health court and also serving as president of the medical staff. In 2014, Dr. Swanljung was hired at Malvern as the Chief of Psychiatry at the Willow Grove campus. He has served as Malvern’s Chief Medical Officer since 2019. Dr. Swanljung’s primary focus has been providing compassionate evidence-based psychiatric and addiction medicine treatment.

Kevin Williams

Kevin Williams has been employed with Malvern Health since April 2019, serving as the Corporate Director of Human Resources and Environment of Care. He oversees the entire Support Service Operation including Human Resources, Maintenance, Housekeeping, and Dietary Departments throughout the company. Kevin manages and serves as the liaison between all general contractors on all projects, ensuring that buildings meet codes and company guidelines are achieved. Mr. Williams came to Malvern with thirty-five years of experience managing Human Resources and Support Services at Universal Health Services (UHS) and most recently holding the title as Regional Director of Support Services. While the Regional Director of Support Services, Kevin provided oversight and management of four dietary departments for UHS Sites. The scope included purchasing with a budget that exceeded 4.4 million dollars, staffing, and regulatory agency compliance. Patient satisfaction and quality rose significantly during his tenure. Kevin has exceptional knowledge of all regulatory agency standards, performance improvement, and quality management. Kevin attended Delaware Technical and Community College.

Nicole Vandermay

Nicole Vandermay serves as the Corporate Director of Risk and Quality Improvement for Malvern Health. Her primary responsibility is to ensure a safe and therapeutic environment throughout all of Malvern’s facilities. By working closely with licensing and quality organizations she can ensure the facilities are meeting the highest standards and engaging in best practices. Nicole started her career in Bucks County as a BHRS Clinical Care Manager. She has worked in Risk Management and Quality Improvement for the past 10 years, in both Boston and Philadelphia. She holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from LaSalle University. Nicole’s therapeutic experience has focused on assessment and family therapy for refugee families upon their entrance to the US.

Jerry Kosmin

Jerry Kosmin joined Malvern Health in May 2019. Prior to his current position, he served as the Director of Business Development for Fairmount Behavioral Health System, a 239-bed behavioral health facility, for over sixteen years. Previously, he worked for PennFriends, a managed care organization, and was the Director of Mental Health Treatment Services for Horizon House, a large community mental health organization. Between 1991 and 1998, Jerry held various roles with Advantage Recovery Network/PsychResource Associates and last held the position of Practice Director for one of their Intensive Outpatient Program sites in Philadelphia. Jerry has over twenty-five years of achievement in the behavioral healthcare industry both in the private and public sectors. Jerry is an accomplished marketing/business development director, program/clinical development leader, administrative and fiscal manager. Jerry graduated from The University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1989. He then received a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from the State University of New York-Albany in 1990. Jerry also graduated from St. Joseph’s University in 2001 with a Master of Science in Health Administration. He has been licensed as a Professional Counselor since 2001.

Brendan Aurand has been the Director of Human Resources at Malvern Health since October 2019. In this position, Brendan specializes in employee engagement, employee relations, EEO compliance, recruitment, and retention. Brendan is a firm believer that a company is only as good as the people for whom it employs, and takes pride in offering professional and personal support to all of Malvern Health’s employees. Brendan is a seasoned HR practitioner, having transitioned from an HR Generalist to an HR Manager and serving the past eight years as Director of Human Resources for several Universal Health Services, Inc. facilities; most recently at Fairmount Behavioral Health System in Philadelphia. Brendan attended La Salle University, in Philadelphia majoring in communication and minoring in business.

As a scholar-practitioner in clinical and school psychology and a health & medical services administrator, Sun has served the communities of the greater Philadelphia metropolitan area and made his home here for the past 21 years. He has had the privilege of entering the lives of children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and their families so that they may better enrich each other through their unique challenges. That privilege has allowed him to provide direct clinical care services, clinical supervision to staff and future staff, and clinical and organizational consultation across the clinical service continuum, social services, human services, public and private entities, and legal systems. Sun now spends most of his time providing clinical and executive leadership for Progressions Behavioral Health Services, Inc. so that our hard-working, loving staff can better serve all who look for or enter its doors. His current professional interests include executive management of office-based and community-based services and facilities in over 65 unique locations; integrated treatment design for educational, social, and behavioral health services; collaborative care delivery systems; and organizational process improvements in a complex and complicated managed care environment. Sun and his team look to answer today tomorrow’s questions on how to support each other to integrate care and services around each person served across the lifespan, to intentionally engage the community with each person served, to uniquely shape treatment services to hit measurable targets for each person served, to make care decisions based upon evidence and not eminence, and to embrace accountability in quality and outcomes. Sun has been a resident of Delaware County in Pennsylvania for over two decades. His wonderful wife is a public-school administrator, and they are blessed with a toddler son and a newborn daughter.

Autumn DeShields joined Malvern Treatment Centers in May 2019. She is an experienced behavioral health administrator with a record of progressive leadership experience in the Philadelphia Market. Autumn is a registered nurse who has worked in behavioral health for over 10 years. She has worked with multiple patient populations including acute, geriatric, adolescent, dual diagnosis, and eating disorder. Autumn’s clinical knowledge has led her to hold multiple leadership roles including Nurse Manager, Assistant Director of Nursing, and Chief Nursing Officer of both Friends Hospital and Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital. In her role as Executive Director, Autumn will be responsible for managing the daily operations of the facility while ensuring patient safety and providing patients with the highest quality clinical care.

Mark Combs, Ph.D

Dr. Combs brings an accomplished record as a behavioral health administrator which is reflected in his transformative approach to training and to leadership. Dr. Combs has formulated innovative organizational changes at some of the largest behavioral health agencies in the country and has consulted nationally on collaborative and person-focused treatment interventions and supports. His vision has focused on the dedicated implementation of evidenced-based treatments which includes bringing a scholar-practice training ethos to organizations as evidenced in numerous practicum/internships and post-doctoral fellowships. Dr. Combs has published on culture, family therapy treatment, and family assessment tools and has been active on governing boards and numerous committees with respect to trauma and recovery-focused care. He consults on the assessment and treatment of individuals and families experiencing mental health challenges and how to incorporate best practices in an array of behavioral health service organizations. Many of the projects he has been associated with have received recognition for achieving sustained clinical benchmarks and treatment efficacy, and in using innovative recovery and trauma-informed care treatment standards. Dr. Combs holds a Master’s degree and Doctoral degree from the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. He holds a Clinical Fellowship with the American Association of Marriage & Family Therapists, is licensed in the state of Pennsylvania as a Marriage and Family Therapist, and has affiliations with numerous national clinical organizations, and reads extensively on research and the application of promising and alternative approaches in behavioral health care. His training includes advanced clinical certifications and training specializations. He is an ardent supporter of community well-being, community sustainability, individual self-care, and is active in promoting the quality of life for all individuals which provides the basis for holistic-focused care. In all facets of his career and his years of service, he affirms the uniqueness of each person and their strengths and in the collaborative process of building hope. By recognizing the unique journey each person makes in their own recovery path, Dr. Combs is committed to being a difference-maker and to providing multifaceted systemic solutions to individuals, their families, and to the community at large.

David Lumpkin

David Lumpkin, M.S.W., L.S.W, is the Executive Director at our King Road campus. He joined Malvern Treatment Centers as a Primary Counselor in 2011. Two years later, David became the Site Supervisor of the Berwyn outpatient site until he was named Executive Director at King Road in March 2017. His career has strongly focused on clinical treatment and patient care all along the treatment continuum including outpatient therapy, inpatient detoxification, and residential services and addiction treatment research. His clinical training focused on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. Prior to joining Malvern, David developed professionally at the VA Hospital of Syracuse, New York; Mercy Philadelphia Hospital, and the Charles O’Brien Treatment Research Center of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. David received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Syracuse University and a Master of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania.

Mary Kim Hofmann has been the Director of Nursing for Malvern Treatment Centers since June 2019. Kim has been a licensed registered nurse since 1982 with almost twenty-five years of diversified experience as a healthcare manager providing supervision, training, project management, direct patient care, and various operational duties. Kim has extensive nursing leadership experience including Director of Nursing positions with several well established behavioral health facilities including Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital, Fairmount Behavioral Health System, Friends Hospital, and Temple University Health System; most recently holding the position of Infection Control Preventionist at Friends Hospital. Kim’s many accomplishments include staff development, employee retention, and redesign of workflow processes within the organizations she has worked. She prides herself on a strong work ethic, a focus on the patient treatment experience, and dedication to patient satisfaction. Kim is well respected by her peers and subordinates as an exceptional teacher and clinical leader.
