Malvern Behavioral Health Opens New Unit for the LGBTQ+ Community

04/19/2023

Malvern Health, Inc is proud to announce that Malvern Behavioral Health has opened a new 22-bed mental health unit for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Malvern admitted its first patients on March 7, 2023

Individuals in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) community often face a number of unjust issues: social stigma, abuse, harassment, and unfortunately, family rejection. The weight of rejection and social stigma combined with the increased risk of bullying, harassment, discrimination, and physical abuse impacts people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, or asexual (LGBTQIA+). This community is also at an increased risk of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Research reports that members of this community are three times more likely to suffer from behavioral and mental health issues.

The Wisteria Program is an inpatient psychiatric program for members of the LGBTQ community. Wisteria is a safe and affirming program designed to treat LGBTQ patients struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and other unhealthy behaviors.

The Wisteria Program uses evidence-based treatment modalities for adults within this community who are struggling with mental health concerns such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and other specific stressors. Treatment can consist of exploration of gender identity, gender dysphoria, and social transition. We also focus on discrimination, victimization, and lack of affirming and supportive environments. Some patients may also experience a co-occurring substance abuse diagnosis.

Feedback from patients has already been extremely positive. Some examples are: “This experience has been nothing short of ‘life changing’.” “Every last staff member was respectful, professional, and sensitive to my needs- and I do mean EVERY staff member”. “These wonderful people have gone above and beyond to help me along my journey to wellness.”

Kratom: Experts Warn Over-the-Counter Supplement can be Dangerous, Addictive

04/23/2021

April 22, 2021 – New data from the CDC shows overdose deaths surged across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

One death in Chester County has a local detective concerned about a herbal supplement that just about anyone can buy in stores or online – kratom.

It can be addictive and lead to the use of drugs. When mixed with other drugs, it can be deadly.

Kratom is an herbal supplement that you can legally buy and sell in the United States. It’s sold in powder, pill, and liquid form.

Kratom is not considered a controlled substance by the FDA.

“It sends a message that it’s not that harmful, it’s not a problem to use,” said Dr. Peter Swanljung. “They don’t realize it can cause physical dependence and cause withdrawal.”

Dr. Swanljung is the Chief of Psychiatry with Malvern Health Inc. where they provide programs and facilities for behavioral health treatment.

03/12/2021

Malvern Health, Inc. is proud to announce that Malvern Treatment Centers opened a new state-of-the-art unit on February 24, 2021. In response to the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania, we have continued to closely monitor the needs of individuals and families battling addiction. In comparison with most traditional programs, the program will provide a unique treatment experience that incorporates the following components:

  • The importance of individual diversity in which complex contributory causes and current life circumstances are understood to develop individually targeted assessments, treatment planning, interventions, and aftercare planning
  • Accurately assessing and delivering targeted interventions based on the patient’s motivational level, psychiatric condition, and readiness for change
  • Evidenced-based treatment approaches
  • Education about and integration of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) options for individuals with an Opiate use Disorder
  • Focus on working with the patient’s present and future situation, resources, and strengths, with a focus on maintaining a solution-oriented approach
  • Well-integrated Relapse Prevention strategies to optimize successful post-treatment recovery through tailored interventions with formal and informal aftercare planning and support system linkage
  • A trauma-informed milieu, which includes supportive, professional staff and a peer interaction process that fosters growth

The new unit will provide inpatient treatment for up to 56 patients providing both detoxification and rehabilitation. Amenities include:

  • A 27,500 square foot unit with multiple spaces for group therapy, all with natural lighting
  • A large recreation room with natural light
